Nestled at the northern frontier of South Sikkim, amidst the breathtaking embrace of Sikkim's natural wonders, lies Lingee Village – a place where the echoes of history blend seamlessly with the whispers of the wind. The village derives its name from 'Lik-ngee,' meaning 'Call there is,' an invitation echoing across the verdant landscape, drawing explorers and wanderers into its heart.

Lingee Village stands as a geographical marvel, encircled by the artistry of nature. To the east, the mighty Teesta River, weaves its tale, while the Samdong East Sikkim graces one side, and the majestic Mount Maenam Range, Dareli, and Panch Pokhori create a natural boundary on the west. Towards the north, the village is separated by the meandering river Rungphap, a tributary of the Teesta, and to the south, Payong Village, also known as Poyong, named after the bamboo 'Gope' used in crafting melodious flutes, stands divided by the Rangla Landslide.

This twin villages Lingee and Payong consist of a heterogeneous mix of Nepali communities like Sharma, Chettri, Rai, Limboo & Gurung, peppered with a few Lepchas. This gives one an opportunity to absorb the different cultures of Sikkim. Agriculture being the mainstay of the village, gives you an opportunity to work in the fields with your hosts.

Unveiling the Hidden Wonders: Panch Pokhari Trek in Sikkim's Wilderness

Embark on an Adventure Like No Other

In the heart of Sikkim's pristine wilderness lies a trek that marries enchantment with serenity – the Panch Pokhari Trek, where 'Panch Pokhari' translates to 'five lakes.' While popular treks like Goecha La draw hordes of trekkers every year, this lesser-known route remains a hidden gem, waiting to be explored by those seeking a truly offbeat adventure.

Embracing Nature's Canvas

What sets the Panch Pokhari Trek apart is its untouched beauty and lack of commercialization. Unlike other well-trodden paths, this trail remains pristine, embraced by enchanting greenery and offering panoramic views of the majestic Kanchendzonga ranges.

Journeying into the Wilderness

The adventure begins in the secluded village of Lingee, nestled in the depths of South Sikkim, serving as the trailhead. The trek meanders through Reserve Forests and the Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary, offering a chance encounter with the rare and elusive Red Panda or the majestic Himalayan Black Bear. The trail's beauty culminates at Panch Pokhari, where five pristine freshwater lakes mirror the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayan ranges. The view from this vantage point is nothing short of magical, transporting trekkers to a surreal world of natural wonders.

The Trekking Experience

Ascending to Panch Pokhari takes 3-4 days, allowing trekkers to soak in the wilderness and savor the journey. The descent back to the base, Green Village Homestay, takes 2-3 days, offering trekkers a different perspective of the landscape. The trek's difficulty level is moderate, making it accessible to trekkers with varying levels of experience. The entire trek takes approximately 5-6 days to complete, providing ample time to immerse oneself in the surrounding beauty.

Best Time to Embark on the Panch Pokhari Trek:

The optimal time to undertake the Panch Pokhari Trek is during the months of April and May. During this period, Sikkim's vibrant flora comes to life, painting the mountain villages with a myriad of rhododendron hues and various species of Himalayan flowers in full bloom. Among these is the captivating Himalayan flower, Rheum nobile, locally known as 'Sikkim sundari.' This trek route becomes a paradise for nature enthusiasts, with blooming flowers reaching heights of 3-5 feet, offering a visual feast.

Choose Your Expedition Dates Wisely

Additionally, the period between August and October offers favorable weather conditions, allowing trekkers to revel in clear skies and stunning views of the snow-clad mountain ranges. However, it is advisable to avoid the winter months from November to February. During this time, the route is shrouded in snow, and the weather becomes extremely chilly, making the trek challenging and potentially hazardous.

Immerse yourself in the untouched beauty of Sikkim's wilderness, where every step is a discovery and every vista is a masterpiece painted by nature. Mahadevsthan of Lingee: The Sacred Cave

In the heart of Lingee Village, nestled amidst the lush beauty of Sikkim's wilderness, lies a place of profound spirituality and ancient mystique – the Mahadevsthan, also known as Lisoong Ney or the Sacred Cave. This sacred sanctuary is not just a destination; it's a timeless journey into the heart of faith and devotion.

The Legend of Lord Munsolong:

The Mahadevsthan, or Sacred Cave, is a place steeped in legend and mysticism. According to local lore, it was here that Lord Munsolong, a figure of divine and supernatural power, sought to bless the land by installing a sacred cave. However, as fate would have it, the crowing of a cock interrupted the installation, and in religious tradition, such installations must be completed overnight. Thus, the sacred cave remained unfinished and relatively unknown, carrying with it an air of mystery.

Lord Munsolong then embarked on an aerial journey to Sangmoo, leaving behind the Mahadevsthan, which has since remained untouched by human hands. The cave is said to have four entrances, but only the southern entrance remains open today; the others remain closed or are visible only as impressions on the outer rock.

The Journey to the Inner Sanctum:

Entering the cave is a spiritual voyage in itself. A narrow passageway weaves through two massive cliffs, leading to the inner chambers of the cave. Inside, a sacred cabin houses the Shiva Linga, the focal point of worship for devotees of Lord Shiva. The journey to reach this sacred cabin entails navigating a labyrinth of zigzagging pathways, a testament to the devotion and determination of those who make the pilgrimage.

Mysteries and Legends:

The Mahadevsthan holds even more mysteries. It is said that a visiting pilgrim lama from Ladakh and his dog once ventured into the cave. As they attempted to enter the inner sanctum, a colossal boulder descended from above, sealing the entrance and trapping them inside. The fate of the lama remains unknown, but the boulder still stands as a silent witness to this mysterious event. Interestingly, the same dog was later found at Sangmoo Sacred Cave, sparking beliefs in an underground interconnected passage between the two sacred sites.

A Center of Devotion:

Today, the Mahadevsthan has become a focal point for Hindu pilgrims. People from far and wide visit this sacred cave to offer prayers and perform pujas, particularly during the auspicious occasion of Shiv Ratri and other religious festivals. In 1985, a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was constructed in front of the eastern entrance, enhancing the spiritual aura of this hallowed ground.

Join Us: Where Spirituality Meets Mystery:

Green Village Homestay invites you to embark on a journey into the heart of faith and mysticism. Come, witness the enigmatic Mahadevsthan, where spirituality meets the unknown, and legends come to life. At this sacred cave, let the ancient tales of Lord Munsolong and the mysteries of the underground passages captivate your imagination.
